Supporting Slab: Challenging Conditions
Our scope included 108 no. bearing piles to support a reinforced concrete slab running parallel to the existing dock wall. The piles were installed to depths of 25 metres via the segmental flight auger (SFA) method and two Klemm 709 drilling rigs.
The ground conditions proved to be challenging with bands of soft alluvial sediment being encountered. Our Klemm 709 rigs were able to use their high torque and crowd capacity to ensure that flighting and overbreak in the varying strata were minimised.
Structural Works: Returning to Site
After the initial three-week piling visit, we demobilised to make way for the Formula E Grand Prix at the exhibition site. Our structural works team subsequently returned to site for 11 weeks, carrying out pile trimming, extensive drainage and construction of a 300 mm thick reinforced concrete slab support by our piles. In total, the works had a value of more than £1.1 million.
