Underpinning, Pynford beams & structural openings, Jacking & moving

Underpinning

We provide specialist underpinning services, to depths of up to 9m. Our team of highly trained engineers and operatives have extensive experience designing and implementing  robust shoring arrangements and confined space safety systems. Wherever possible we prefer to install deep single stage underpins, instead of forming underpins in multiple phases. This provides a range of benefits, minimising the number of phases of loading and reducing progressive building settlements, and achieving continuity of reinforcement to reduced construction cycle time.  Where there’s sensitivity to the smallest movements, pre-loading between the underpins and existing structures can be introduced.

Pynford beams & structural openings

Pynford beams were originally developed as a reinforced concrete solution for underpinning, but are now offered by GSS for other applications such as structural openings, and as a component of temporary works scheme where working space is limited.  This technique can be used to allow the installation of both reinforced concrete and steel beams.

Used in the right circumstances pynford beams can form a single beam opening, a simple column/beam opening or a full box frame. It is a powerful solution which can enable an entire building to be modified to open plan. We are able to install beams under occupied premises by using sacrificial beam supports within the walls instead of temporary works needles.

GSS also offers arrange of structural support options including needles and stooling, and have significant experience developing and designing these temporary works schemes.

Jacking & moving

GSS has particular competence in structural jacking and moving of structures. Jacking can be used to transfer the load from temporary works into new permanent works, to ensure structural movements are minimised in original structures as openings are created or loads are transferred to new foundations. Jacks can also be used to raise or lower existing structures or buildings.

SoILmec SR95

Our SR-95 rig can operate in rotary and CFA modes and is the extended mast version with wider tracks for stability, has remote tracking for loading/unloading and a dual auger cleaner to improve cleaning efficiency. In rotary (LDP) mode it can be fitted with a locking kelly bar to bore to depths of 70m at diameters ranging from 600mm to 1900mm. In CFA mode it can be configured in multiple configurations (4 line and 2 line) to meet site requirements. CFA bored lengths of up to 34m and diameters ranging from 350mm to 1200mm can be achieved.  The rig has a weight of about 100tonnes and has a Euro stage V engine.

Klemm 708

The Klemm 708 is ideal for tight access sites where umbilical hoses would cause a logistical issue. Capable of drilling 508/450mm case and auger piles to a depth of 26m and SFA piles to depths of 18m. At 10tonnes the rig is ideal for renovation works from an existing slab or minimally designed piling mats.

Klemm 709-2 and 709-3

The Klemm 709-2 and the 709-3 are excellent mid-range rigs with respective weights of 13.5 and 18.5 tonnes.  Both rig types are capable of installing case and auger piles with diameters up to 660/600mm and to depths of 32m dependent on ground conditions. The 709 can also install SFA piles to diameters of 600mm overcoming the problem of operating a full size CFA rig on smaller sites or where restricted headroom exists.
