Kiddapore Reservoir

Hampstead

Project Information

One of the Oldest Reservoirs in London

Built in 1863, Kidderpore reservoir is one of the oldest reservoirs in London. The brickwork structure is also a very fine example of Victorian engineering. The reservoir supplies drinking water to11,000 homes in north London.

The project involved replacing the existing aluminium roof, installed in 1963, with a new concrete cover slab. The roof was supported by some impressive Victorian brickwork arches which were exposed for the first time in 50 years in order for works to be carried out.

GSS Piling was contracted to design and install stitch piles to enhance the pier capacities within the reservoir and support anew concrete cover slab.

Submerged Victorian Brickwork Arches

Before work could begin, 12 million litres of water (the equivalent of nearly five Olympic swimming pools) needed to be drained from the reservoir. This exposed some impressive and rarely seen Victorian architectural brickwork in the structure forming the foundation of the reservoir.

Stitch Coring

Work involved stitch coring through 63Nr existing column bases (@ 20° rake) and the installation of 126 Nr. 308/250mm diameter piles, 12.0m in length. These were heavily reinforced for shear and bending
